About Dullstroom
Only 2 hours from Gauteng, en route to the Kruger National Park lies the tranquil little village of Dullstroom. As the highest village in South Africa, situated at 2100m above sea level in the Steenkampsberg range, the town dates back to the early 1880’s, when Dutch settlers came to the area. The town derives its name from one Wolterus Dull, chairman of the Dutch immigrants in the area at the time. The “stroom” (stream) refers to the abundance of water in the area: The Crocodile River, which runs through the Kruger National Park, has its origin in Dullstroom. Other major tributaries, like the Lunsklip, Klip River, Steelpoort and Elands River, do not only feed important rivers and marshlands, but have also become synonymous with some of the best trout fishing in the country.
It is true: Dullstroom has become synonymous with Trout-Fishing – hosting yearly competitions and luring fishing enthusiast from all over the country, and the world. But it has also become much more than that. It has become a haven for artists and musicians. Foodies from all over flock to dine in some of the quirkiest, quaintest and bespoke restaurants the country has to offer. Fitness fanatics take advantage of the sub-alpine climate to train here for months at end. Outdoor lovers roam our misty hills on mountain bikes or walking- and jogging trails for adventurous weekends. And romantics cuddle in-front of roaring fireplaces on cool, misty evenings. Be sure to bring your binoculars as the area also well-known as habitat for three endangered cranes, a vast variety of wild flowers and rare species of mammals – a true paradise for the nature lover.
Be it for a quick break away to country fresh air, for a fine dining experience or adventure in the mountains and forests, Dullstroom clearly has a lot to offer. If you’re looking for weekend accommodation, the town boasts a wide selection of elegant hotels and a variety of country accommodation and guest houses.
