This friendly Flyfishing shop in Dullstroom is run by the Hunter family who have more than 75 years combined flyfishing experience both locally and abroad. One can get anything from advice on how and where to fish, to a large selection of hand-made flies and fishing accessories.
John Hunter, with his fond memories of the Scottish Highlands and his wonderful broad Scottish accent sets the scene perfectly for hours of talk about trout fishing in any shape or form. And talk, he will, endlessly. He is absolutely passionate about the sport and his greatest love is to instil this into anyone and everyone that that will listen. He was born and brought up in the heart of trout and salmon country in Scotland. His mentor was Eric Campbell, who represented Scotland internationally for trout fishing and he won many competitions himself.
Many years ago, whilst still living in Scotland, he would fly out to S.A. specifically to compete in the Dullstroom Classic Nine years ago he decided to “retire” here. He bought the Village Angler on a whim and it has been a sharp learning curve introducing a business element to his passion. He sees it as the means to the end of introducing people to the sport that has meant so much to him and he focuses on imparting whatever information and experience he can to visitors to the area and his shop.
He offers casting lessons, information on trout behaviour, entomology of the waters, water craft and knot tying.
He loves the fact that Dullstroom offers remarkably pristine, unpolluted waters, set in beautiful scenery and that it reminds him of Scotland!
He is on the committee of the Dullstroom Fly Fishers Association which organises the well-known Bonanza in October each year. It is a solely charity based competition and last year proudly handed over a cheque to “Helping Hands” for R 70 000.00
